Ongoing Maintenance.

Daisy & Apollo

The bunnies’ outdoor pens always require a reasonable amount of maintenance over the winter months. I am quite behind with my repairs due to the bad weather we’ve been having. Apollo & Daisy did a reasonable amount of damage to their pen, when I talk about damage I am meaning digging of course.

The entrance to their pen took the biggest hit. All filled in now though.
Also down the side of their pen. This was dugout when both of them were trying to get to Peanut & Tilly on the other side.
Thumper & Katie having time out from their pen last year. Thumper not satisfied with digging up his pen he makes a start on the outside area.
Thumper tried to dig under his barrel last year & also taught Katie what good fun it is to dig. She made good progress further down the pen.
A favourite for everybun – digging down the side of their pens to try & get at the other buns.

But of course the one bunny who took it to the limit was of course Peanut dutifully helped by Tilly.  Their pen had turned into an ankle breaker if you weren’t careful.

Peanut & Tilly. I thought they were going to give me a helping paw with their pen repairs. Not to be just delayed me!
The ankle breaking style which was scattered across their pen.
This was before I filled in, note the entrances to two tunnels on the left side. One went all along the side of the pen.

As you can see it’s not just hole filling but the weeds need to be taken care of too. I also fertilize,(not harmful to the bunnies), the pens & reseed. Now you might think why bother when it’s going to get dug up again next year. Well, if I didn’t there would be no grass for them to play out in the following year, just soil & weeds. That’s also one of the reasons I take the bunnies off the outdoor pens over winter.  The grass needs time to rest & regrow. Below are pictures of the pens in 2021/22 just as winter started when the bunnies were laid off the pens & just as spring was beginning when the bunnies were about to go out again.

Pen scalped.
The pen has recovered & the lush green grass has grown back.

Oh & if you’re wondering about Poppy & Toffee they don’t do any pen digging!!!
