Hello folks, my mum has let me do this post this week. As you can see from the title & the remnants of syringe wrappers it has been vaccination time. I feel quite strongly about getting us vaccinated as even now there are still pet bunnies being taken into the vets with those three horrible diseases. It’s so needless that they have contracted the diseases & are suffering so much when it could have been avoided by a simple vaccination. I dread to think how many lose their lives due to being unvaccinated.
Anyway, let me do a recap on the diseases. So we have three diseases that we need to be vaccinated against & these are:
Myxomatosis (Myxo).
Viral Haemorrhagic Disease. (VHD1). Also known as Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease1. (RHD1).
Viral Haemorrhagic Disease2. (VHD2). Also known as Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease2. (RHD2).
All three diseases inflict terrible suffering & the prognosis for any of the diseases is pretty grim. Here are a few of the symptoms:
Swollen eyelids eventually resulting in blindness.
Lumps around the genitals & head.
Loss of appetite.
Fever.
Lethargy.
Convulsions.
Blood stained discharge from the nose or mouth.
Jaundice.
The good news is you can vaccinate your precious bunnies with just one vaccine to cover all three diseases. So please do it & do remember, house rabbits are not immune just because they live indoors.
If you’d like to read more about the diseases, how they are transmitted, the specific symptoms for each disease & the specific prognosis, then please click here.
Just one last thing, another benefit of having your bunny vaccinated is the vet usually includes a full Mot, so that’s teeth check, nails, lumps & bumps – everything. Well worth doing as a problem has been found with one of my family which we would not have known about had it not been for the Mot check. It also gives you the chance to ask about any problems you have noticed with your bunny. More to come on the issue found at our vaccination.
