Toffee’s Troubles!

Toffee doing what he loves best – sunbathing & hanging out with Poppy. (She is in the box a touch overexposed)!

Toffee decided to give me a scare the other week. I noticed his left eye seemed to be swollen compared to his right eye.  My immediate thoughts were that he had glaucoma, which would be a disaster for him.

His left eye but hard to tell on the photo that it was swollen.

I booked him in at the vets but the day I was due to take him I noticed his right eye had started to weep.  By this point I had given him some painkillers as he seemed in pain.

His right eye that was weeping. I had just wiped it.

I mainly took the photos to show the vet as I couldn’t get him seen for a day & always useful if anything changes.  At the vets he was given a very thorough eye check & his pressures were taken.  Thankfully his pressures were normal so no glaucoma. I was so relieved.  He has got ulcers on both his eyes though & this is probably a result of him bumping into things. As much as you can make the environment safe it is inevitable that he will have some bumps. He was to continue with the painkiller & was given some eye drops for both eyes, which were to be administered four times a day. Thankfully, he is a very good bunny to medicate & has already become addicted to the painkiller, licking it eagerly out of the syringe.

Sweet gentle Toffee.

My other worry with him is that he has started to produce a few soft poos.  I immediately put him on probiotics.  Initially, it did seem to help but after the vet visit & being on painkillers I wonder if that is why I am not having the success I hoped for. So I have now started him on some Profibre to help his guts. I am quite worried as I have seen this before in my older bunnies & it can be a sign the organs are failing.  His weight is stable so that is a positive.

Toffee has since been back to the vets & the ulcers have gone. I am still working on his soft poos.
