Soil Pit!

Apollo having a great time.

I am always looking for things to keep the boredom at bay over winter for my bunnies. For a while I had an idea of a soil/sand pit. I looked at the sand pits available and knew my lot of bunnies would make short work of them. So I opted to get their grandad to make one.  The advantage of that was I could have it as big as I wanted, and I needed it big for Apollo and Katie. I opted for soil rather than sand as the research I had done said sand was bad for getting in their ears and eyes, even the child friendly sand. Also, I knew mine would prefer the soil as they’d be able to make a tunnel, well I should say the start of one without it collapsing.

I lined the bottom of the box with a piece of gym matting, the reason being if the soil was damp or any toiletting was happening in any corners it wouldn’t soak into the wood and rot it. I also put a wheel at each corner as it is a touch heavy and I would not be able to carry it to clean under and around it. A couple of the wheels can be locked so the box doesn’t go zooming off down the shed.

Apollo finding interesting smells.

I started to fill the box with soil you can buy from garden centres and since then a helpful mole in our garden has been providing me with barrowfuls that I can keep topping the box up.

Poppy interested in the soil pit but not liking the way in, so looks to jump down.

The bunnies pretty much told me early on that they don’t like jumping over into the pit, Apollo doesn’t care he loves it, but no one else did, even though they could easily jump in.  So we added a tunnel entrance.

Entrance into the soil pit.
A plastic tunnel was put through the hole, this was so I could bend it with the aim of no one digging soil out of the box.
Had to support the tunnel with soil and it was trial and error to get the bend right.
Poppy approved and was very happy to go through the tunnel.
Apollo preferred to use the tunnel too.
Peanut as ever was a bit nervous of the tunnel at first but he did soon head in.
Molly loved going through the tunnel and doing lots of digging.

There will be more soil pit antics to come.
