Poppy has turned into a very sad little girl since the death of her beloved Toffee. She has lost all enthusiasm and isn’t even eating as normal.

On cleaning out days I let Poppy have play of the shed in the hope she’d return to her normal self but all she wanted to do was sit by her pen, hence me giving her the mattress. She didn’t visit anyone and seems so sad.

Poppy continued to eat her hay so I wasn’t overly concerned that she wasn’t eating her usual food. She could do with losing the grams as Toffee’s eating had reduced and Poppy cleared the dish every time.
In my experience you should never underestimate the impact a loss of a partner can have on a bunny. Some get a new lease of life surprisingly, others give up and some just seem lost for a while. I feel it’s important to give more attention to the bunny who is left behind, give them extra treats, I don’t just mean food. For instance I have got Poppy out of her pen more, give her more time outside, anything to get her interest back. If she wants my attention I make time for her, it’s also realising how big of an adjustment it is for the bereaved bunny. Poppy had been a carer for Toffee for a number of years with his blindness and deteriorating health. She was so used to always checking on Toffee and making sure he was ok I think she forgot how to be her own bunny.
The video below shows Peanut trying to motivate and cheer Poppy up, she wasn’t overly impressed.
The video below was taken of Poppy before Toffee died and this is the aim to get her back to enjoying herself.
